The Blueberry Girl Book Reading at the 30th Annual Whitesbog Blueberry Festival

The Blueberry Girl CoverVisit me tomorrow, Saturday, June 29th at the annual Whitesbog Blueberry Festival, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Whitesbog General Store. I’m doing an illustrated “storytelling,” interactive program for kids (and their lucky parents!) about the remarkable girl, Elizabeth C. White, who changed the world of blueberries.

“Miss Lizzie” as she was known, grew up on the historic cranberry/blueberry farm in
south Jersey and cultivated the wild blueberry! I am using images from “The Blueberry Girl,” the book I will be publishing soon (July or early August). Bruce Arant, has illustrated my book in the style of Chris Van Allsburg, author of “The Polar Express,”
and the images are beautiful!

We will also hear the folk tale of the bleeding heart, a plant Miss Lizzie loved, and examine sphagnum moss which grows around the cranberry bogs and was used by Native Americans and early settlers as dressing for wounds and diaper material!

I will give those attending a discount on the book when it is available. A portion of the proceeds from the book also goes to the Whitesbog Preservation Trust, where I am a volunteer.
